Photographs, mostly mounted in albums, depict the sisters, their ceremonies and celebrations, and the schools, orphanages, and hospitals run by them. Views include interiors and exteriors of buildings, such as classrooms, laboratories and dormitories, views of the grounds, and individual students, orphans, and patients, ca.1880's-1960's. Institutions shown include St. Vincent's Summer School, East Moriches, Long Island; College of Mount St. Vincent, Bronx, N.Y.; Foundling Hospital, New York City; Academy of Mount St. Vincent, Tuxedo Park, N.Y.; St. Francis Xavier Convent, Nassau, Bahamas; St. Agatha Home; Seton Hospital; and St. Mary's Hospital, Port Jervis, N.Y. Engravings, 1861 and 1881, of McGowan's Pass, the first New York Mother House of the Sisters of Charity, located at 109th St. in Central Park. Photographs of ceremonies and celebrations such as Final Vows ceremony, 1963; Novitiate Habit Day, 1967; Investitute and First Vows, 1960's; the Beatification of Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rome, 1963; Pilgrimage to Rome, 1931; and other events. Some albums contain clippings, invitations, and other memorabilia. A few scrapbooks without photographs are included.

Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City in 1774. She married William Magee Seton, a New York merchant, in 1794. In 1797, with Isabella Graham and others, she founded a society for the relief of widows, the first charitable organization in New York City. Her husband died in 1803. In 1805 she converted to Catholicism, and in 1808 she began a girls' school in Baltimore, Maryland. In the spring of 1809 she and four others formed a community called Sisters of St. Joseph.
